The Media

In today’s world adolescents are exposed to various types of media that support different messages. These messages play a key role in developing the judgement and behavior of adolescents. (Roberts, 2009) For example many children who choose to play violent video games act out in violent ways when they are angered. In a surrvey the average amount of time adolescents (11 to 15 years of age) spend an average of 8 hours and 40 minutes on media networks a day. (Rideout, 2010) These uses are mostly in telavision and video game usage. However different types of media affect how adolecents behave and precieve the world around them. One of the main networks for media is the television.
By the time an adolescent graduates from high school it is expected that they have watched an average of 20,000 hours of TV. (Stasberger, 2009) That is far greater than the maximum amount of time spent the classroom by that age. It is important to remember the positive and negative effects of television. Television is a great way to introduce many educational programs. However, watching TV can have a negative impact as well. Adolescents who watched many violent films when they were younger are more likely to act violently when they are old. Also adolescents who watch programs with sexual behavior might have ideas about sex that the shows are presenting to them. These mindsets can be dangerous.
Other media types such as music and internet sites also have large impacts on the lives of adolescents today. The twenty-first century has come and with a generation of children who desire to be instantly satisfied and connected with the world around them through social networks online, and constant texting on cell phones. Music is constantly being played in the ears of adolescents ranging from punk rock, country, to classic 80s. Internet is available on almost any handheld device.

Concept Applied in Classroom

As a middle school teacher in this post-millennium world where technology is anything but obsolete it is so easy to get carried away with the new technology in the classroom. Smartboards are the new Blackboards. Instead of paper quizzes, computerized quizzes show up on the board and students answer questions with remotes. Computers allow for lessons to give interactive and hands on learning a whole new meaning, when adolescents can simply get online and create a avatar in a town where they have to learn to live. Books are becoming a rarity in the classroom, while the one computer in the corner seems to have multiplied so that every student can have one. As a teacher it is so important to take advantage of these great media outlets.
One idea that a teacher may use in a social studies classroom is the idea of the Smartboard. These quizzes allow to students to use remotes to answer the questions. Also they allow the teacher to get results almost instantly. This allows the teacher to see if the students are actually learning the lessons for the day or if she needs to go over some material again.(2.9)
A government teacher could have students create an campaign ad for television. She may have the student create certain campaign promises, including goals for the future, and reasons for running. The students would have to come up with logical and realistic ways to better our country and then show how they would do so using technology(TV). (2.6/2.1)
